Training Success Boosts Confidence and Prospects

Sue was employed as the Accounts Officer by the Royal Air Forces Association and was keen to update her IT skills and develop her role. After liaising with her Union Rep she contacted St Antony’s Centre with a view to undertaking training to upskill and improve her CV. Through the Workplace Learning programme, Sue was able to access fully funded training at St Antony’s Centre and embark on an NVQ Level 2 ICT qualification.

To begin with Sue felt unsure about the training as it was all new to her and she was concerned she might feel out of place. This was far from the case and she explains that “I had a lovely warm welcome at the office where I was to do my training, they made me feel really welcome and not out of place at all.” She also appreciated the way she was able to fit the course in around her work and the approachability and flexibility of the tutor: “she was more than willing to help, she showed me everything I needed and more…she showed me how it worked and how to make things better. That helped a lot.”

Unfortunately, whilst completing her course, Sue was informed that she would be made redundant, but this news only strengthened her desire to extend her range of skills. She revealed that “the course did my confidence the world of good! Going through redundancy can make you feel very low, doubt your worth and skills and wonder if you are employable. Little by little learning what I did helped me to feel much better about myself, especially when I got my first certificate!”

Sue was able to find a new job and feels strongly that the training she received contributed to her successfully landing both the interview and her new role. She found the whole experience positive and explains “a few months ago the bottom dropped out of my world, figuratively speaking, not knowing what I would do next, where I would go or who would employ me. I never thought I would end up doing some training and getting certificates, especially at my age! I know I’m not past it but being somewhere for so long, it was very daunting and frightening thinking I would have to start all over again!. I can’t tell you what a difference it has made, thanks to you all. I would recommend this to all!”

In the future Sue is keen to undertake additional training and is considering attending night classes, something she would never have had the confidence to do 12 months ago.
